What is a MIFARE Classic 1K card?
A MIFARE Classic 1K card is a contactless smart card with 1KB of memory, divided into 16 sectors. It operates at 13.56 MHz and complies with the ISO/IEC 14443 Type A standard, making it widely used in access control and public transport systems.

What is the memory structure?
The MIFARE Classic 1K card has 1024 bytes total, divided into 16 sectors (each with 4 blocks of 16 bytes). The last block of each sector stores access keys and conditions.

What is the UID?
A MIFARE 1K card has a 4-byte unique identifier (UID) that is fixed during manufacturing. Some “UID writable” cards allow modification, but standard MIFARE Classic 1K cards have immutable UIDs.

What is the read range of Mifare 1K?
The read range is up to 10 cm, depending on the reader and environment. This makes it suitable for applications requiring close proximity.

How secure is it?
The MIFARE Classic 1K card uses CRYPTO1 encryption, but it has known vulnerabilities and can be compromised. It is suitable for low-security applications.

Are there security vulnerabilities?
Yes, the CRYPTO1 algorithm is broken, allowing unauthorized access through various attacks. For higher security, consider MIFARE DESFire or MIFARE Plus.

How are MIFARE Classic 1K cards read and written?
Reading and writing require a 13.56 MHz RFID reader/writer. Authentication is needed to access data, with each sector protected by independent keys.

What are Key A and Key B?
Key A and Key B are 6-byte passwords stored in each sector trailer for data protection. Different keys can be set for each sector.

Can MIFARE Classic 1K cards be cloned?
Yes, due to vulnerabilities, they can be cloned using specialized tools. This is a concern for applications requiring high security.

Can the UID be modified?
Standard MIFARE Classic 1K cards have fixed UIDs, but “UID writable” cards allow modification. This feature is useful for certain applications but can introduce security risks.

What are common applications?
MIFARE Classic 1K cards are used in public transport, access control, employee IDs, time attendance, event tickets, and loyalty programs.

What devices are compatible?
Compatible with 13.56 MHz readers and many NFC-enabled Android phones. Limited support on iOS devices.

How do MIFARE Classic 1K cards differ from MIFARE DESFire or MIFARE Plus?
MIFARE DESFire offers higher security (AES encryption) and faster processing. MIFARE Plus is a backward-compatible upgrade with selectable security levels.
